" Dedicated to Improving Medical Research for Veterans in the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System "

VA Research Saves Lives

  • What is a VA Non-profit Research Organization?
  • VA non-profit research organizations help VA scientists perform medical research on behalf of veterans by obtaining and administering funding from private, Federal and State agencies for research projects and clinical studies. The non-profit status of the research organizations makes it easier for VA scientists to obtain the equipment and supplies they need to perform their research. In addition, the organizations are able to employ research personnel for VA scientists to meet the special requirements of their studies. At VA Medical Centers around the country, these organizations have greatly improved the research capabilities of VA scientists.

  • TEMPVA and the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System
  • TEMPVA is dedicated to supporting medical research in the Department of Veterans Affairs Central Texas Veterans Health Care System (CTVHCS), at its medical facilities in Waco, Temple, Marlin and Austin. TEMPVA may be reached at (254) 899-4069

  • Research Projects at CTHCS
  • Current clinical research activities of CTVHCS investigators include studies of treatments for heart disease, prostate, bladder, colorectal, and lung and blood cancers stroke chemical dependency, PTSD, schizophrenia, organ failure, cataract surgery, and bowel, throat and feet problems. Clinical research means that we are trying to find the most effective therapies by comparing various drug or other treatments.
  • Basic research activities include scientific studies of: hearing, asbestos-related lung damage, PTSD and stress reaction in women and gulf war vets, cellular biochemistry of the lung, genetics of schizophrenia, brain function in depression and stroke, brain structure in schizophrenia and Alzheimer's Disease, and animal models of thalamic dysfunction in schizophrenia. Basic research means that we are trying to find new types of treatments for a disease or condition, or are trying to find out information about the disease process itself.
  • Researchers at the centers have obtained funding for their studies from VA Research programs, pharmaceutical firms, the National Institutes of Health, Texas A&M University, the Scottish Rite Schizophrenia Research Program and from local sources such as Scott & White Hospital/Foundation and the Temple Area Alzheimer's Family Support Group.
