Music plays an important role in our lives, whether we are musicians, or not. In addition to the entertainment value, whether it is Country & Western, Bluegrass, Jazz, so-called Classical, Soul, or any of dozens of forms . . . we are always affected by it. A movie or a TV commercial without it is not nearly as effective. Even "elevator" music has its value to calm or entertain captive riders, although sometimes this writer wonders about That!
"Music takes us out of the actual and whispers to us dim secrets that
startle our wonder as to who we are, and for what, whence, and whereto." ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson"Music is a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy" ~ Ludwig Van Beethoven
"After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the
inexpressible is music." ~ Aldous Huxley, Music at Night
"The mind of man is capable of anything because everything is in it,
all the past as well as all the future." - Joseph Conrad, Heart of Darkness
"A verbal art like poetry is reflective; it stops to think. Music is
immediate, it goes on to become..." ~ W. H. Auden
"The man that hath no music in himself, Nor is not moved with concord
of sweet sounds, Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils. The motions
of his spirit are dull as night, And his affections dark as Erebus. Let no
such man be trusted." ~ William Shakespeare
"He who possesses art and science has religion; he who does not
possess them, needs religion." ~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
"To those who would, who sense something wonderful, powerful, beautiful
within. To all that the future knows. Visions unto you..." ~ Celcius

| Text: Joseph Mohr, 1816 Melody: Franz Xaver Gruber, 1818 The following is the complete German text from an authentic version of Franz Gruber's known as Autograph VII and written around 1860. Most English versions of "Silent Night!" include just three verses. These correspond to a translation from the original text of verses 1, 6 and 2, in that order. Next to the German text below is a direct translation into English. The intent here is not to make translated lyrics which fit the melody, but rather to provide the reader with a better understanding of the original German text. |
| Silent Night in the original German wording, followed by the English. |
| 1. Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht! Alles schläft; einsam wacht Nur das traute heilige Paar. Holder Knab im lockigten Haar, Schlafe in himmlischer Ruh! Schlafe in himmlischer Ruh! |

3. Silent night! Holy night! Which brought salvation to the world, From Heaven's golden heights, Mercy's abundance was made visible to us: Jesus in human form, Jesus in human form. |
| 4. Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht! Wo sich heut alle Macht Väterlicher Liebe ergoß Und als Bruder huldvoll umschloß Jesus die Völker der Welt, Jesus die Völker der Welt. |
4. Silent night! Holy night! Where on this day all power of fatherly love poured forth And like a brother lovingly embraced Jesus the peoples of the world, Jesus the peoples of the world. |
