Background

Richard Allen (Rick) Reed was graduated from Huntington (WV) High School in 1982...Won three letters in baseball.

Attended Marshall University in Huntington, WV and played baseball there as a Junior

Also performed in Little League, Babe Ruth League and American Legion Baseball Programs.

 

Career Transactions

Selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 26th round of the June, 1986 Free Agent Draft.

Granted free agency on April 3, 1992.

Signed by the Kansas City Royals on April 4, 1992.

Granted free agency on August 5, 1993.

Signed by the Texas Rangers on August 11, 1993.

Granted free agency by the Rangers on May 13, 1994.

Signed by the Cincinnati Reds as a six-year minor league free agent on May 13, 1994.

Signed by the New York Mets as a six-year minor league free agent on November 20, 1995.

Re-signed by the Mets on October 15, 1996.

1996

Spent the entire season with Norfolk (AAA) of the International League.

Led the league with 28 games started and 182.0 innings pitched.

Finished second m the IL with a 3.16 ERA and ranked third with 128 strikeouts.

Also was first among the IL pitchers with 47 total chances and 34 assists.

AIIowed 9.94 base runners per nine innings, the second-best mark in the league. His walk ratio of 1.53 per nine innings was third-best.

The opposition hit .243 against him for the year.

In 22 of his 28 starts, he allowed three or less runs.

Over his final 11 starts, he only permitted more than three runs on one occasion.

Went at least six innings in 23 of his 28 starts and went at least seven innings in 14 starts.

ln three starts against Charleston. Toledo and Scranton Wilkes-Barre between June 4th and June 21st, he went 21 innings and allowed just one unearned run.

Had a three-game winning streak with triumphs over Rochester and Toledo, twice, from July 13th-July 23rd. Only gave up three earned runs in 21.2 innings.

Posted a 5-4 record with four no decisions over his final 13 starts (29 earned runs in 87 innings, 3.00 ERA) from June 24th to August 29th.

Struck out a season-high eight batters, twice, July 4th vs. Richmond and again on August 7th vs. Richmond. Also had four games with seven strikeouts.

In July. he was 3-0 with a 2.12 ERA in five starts (eight earned runs in 34.0 Innings).

Also was 5-4 with a 2.60 ERA (28 runs in 97.0 innings) in 14 home starts

 

In the Majors

1995

His contract was purchased from Indianapolis (AAA) of the American Association by the Cincinnati Reds on July 21st. Was in four games with the Reds, three starts.

Optioned to Indianapolis (AAA) of the American Association on August 14th.

1994

Had his contract purchased from Oklahoma City (AAA) of the American Association by the Texas Rangers on April 19th. Was with the Rangers for four games...Made three starts. Was designated for assignment on May 10th.

1993

Was recalled from Omaha (AAA) of the American Association by Kansas City on July 25th.

Made his only appearance for the Royals in relief on July 28th against Texas. Designated for assignment on August Ist. Granted free agency after declining an assignment to Omaha.

Signed by the Texas Rangers organization as a free agent on August 6th.

Was 1-3 in five starts at Oklahoma City (AAA) of the American Association before his contract was purchased by Texas on September I st.

Earned a victory in relief vs Minnesota on September 11th.

Designated for assignment on September 17th and outrighted to Oklahoma City.

1992

Signed as a free agent by Kansas City prior to the start of the year.

Joined dhe Royals on June 3rd from Omaha (AAA) of the American Association. Hurled a seven-hit shutout September 30th at California, the same game George Brett recorded his 3,000th hit.

1991

Made one start for the Pirates, a no-decision outing vs. Atlanta on July 31st.

Was with Pittsburgh from June 5th-August 7th.

Hurled a four-hit shutout with a career-high nine strikeouts in his first start, June 25th at Philadelphia.

1989

Joined the Pirates on July 23 from Buffalo (AAA) of the International league.

Made his major league debut on August 4th vs. the Mets. Hurled eight scoreless innings for the victory.

Made one more start before returning to Buffalo on August 14th.

 

In the Minors

Started the year with Indianapolis (AAA) of the American Association. Had his contract purchased by the Reds on July 21st. Paced the Indians in innings pitched (135.0) and strikeouts (92).

1994

Started the year with Oklahoma City (AAA) of the American Association.

Made two starts for the 89ers before being granted free agency on May 13th.

Sigmed with the Cincinnati Reds and was optioned to Indianapolis (AAA) of the American Association.

Appeared in 21 games with the Indians, all starts

Pitched three complete games and had one shutout.

Was second of his Indianapolis team in innings pitched (140.1) and listed third in strikeouts with 79.

1993

Combined to go 12-7 with a 3.32 ERA in 24 starts at Omaha (AAA) and Oklahoma City (AAA) of the American Association.

Led the Association in shutouts, had the third lowest ERA, tied for third in complete games and tied for fourth in victories.

Allowed just 0.91 walks and 9.26 baserunners per nine innings, the best figures of any American Association starter...Held the opposition to a .242 batting average, the fifth best mark in the association.

Was selected for the Triple A All-Star Game.

1992

Began the year with Omaha (AAA) of the American Association and was promoted to Kansas City on June 3nd.

1991

Named the American Association's "Pitcher of the Year". Paced the Association in victories and was ranked second in innings pitched. Started for the National League team in the TripleAAII-Star Team.

1990

Tossed one and two-hit shutouts for Buffalo (AAA) of the American Association.

1989

Captured eight of his last 10 decisions at Buffalo to earn a promotion to Pittsburgh on July 23rd.

1988

Made the jump from Class A to the major leagues.

Was a combined 12-4 with a 2.07 ERA for Salem (A), Harrisburg (AA) and Buffalo (AAA).

Joined the Pittsburgh Pirates on August 4th.

1987

Ranked second on his Macon (A) team in appearances and saves.
