| The Plants of Coryell County | ![]() |
This list of plants of Coryell County is by no means a complete list and only highlights some of what I like as suggested ornamental native plants of Coryell County for use in a wide range of Texas. Coryell County is 676,249 acres in size with the city of Gatesville as the county seat. Coryell County is located in the Grand Prairie region of Central Texas. The major rivers in Coryell County are the Leon River, the Cowhouse, and Coryell Creek. Coryell County has a lot of diversity in habitats - river bottoms, open prairie, rolling hills and side canyons from small and tight to large and open. Along with 27 soil types, the list of plants growing is truly large. As for myself, I am learning new plants all the time! Every year new plants join old favorites to make my list more rich and complete. There are many plants I have seen in the counties that surround Coryell, that I have not seen in the wild within Coryell County. For example, the Dog's Tooth Violet (Erythronium albidum) in McLennan County or Drummond Phlox (Phlox drummondii) in Lampasas County or the Purple Coneflower (Echinacea angustifolia) in Bosque and Bell County. A few plants are rare and isolated but are worth consideration as ornamentals, such as the Big-Tooth Maple (Acer grandidentatum) and the Sycamore-Leaf Snow Bell (Styrax platanifolius). In some cases, only one plant is noted like the Cedar Elm (Ulmus crassifolia) when in fact, we have 4 types of Elms within the county. The four types are the American, Slippery, Cedar and Winged. The most important thing with native plants is to have fun. Go out and look in the pastures, prairies, fields and forests in your backyard. The more you look, the more you'll see and by learning one plant at a time, one day you will be amazed at the expert you have become! Select from the following menu by clicking on the topic. Click on
